Arrested for a horrific double murder just outside the rural mountain town of Sherman, Oregon, a young prisoner is proving to be unmanageable. Deranged, and occasionally utterly confused, the suspect also displays ingenuity and talents that would label him a genius. An amnesiac without identity, he begins to call himself Sinlock.
Assisted by people that no one else can see, Sinlock is determined to prove his innocence. Apparitions swirl around him, supplying their unique insight into the gruesome killings. Sinlock uses their skills and knowledge to win a tentative freedom.
The only question he can’t answer is the one now forming in everyone’s mind… Who is Sinlock?
The question gnaws at Detective Desmond Carroll and psychiatrist Julie Byrnes, because the suspect – whose eyes don’t stay the same color – is unlike anyone either of them has encountered before. The police want him in prison, the psychiatrist wants him in a padded cell, but if his invisible companions are right the real killer is still on the loose.
The apparitions insist they aren’t mere products of a diseased mind, but are real people, trapped inside of Sinlock and forced to share space where his memories should be. They are one thousand of the worst souls that walked the last century, some of whom are brilliant, some charming, and all monsters. While their collective experiences may be enough to solve this crime, whether or not he’s guilty of these murders could be the least of Sinlock’s problems.
